Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some common questions about our dog training and walking services. We aim to provide clarity and support for all our clients to ensure a smooth experience.

What areas do you cover?

I’m based in South Devon and mainly cover Totnes and the surrounding towns and villages. If you’re a little further away, don’t worry, I often travel to neighbouring areas or arrange remote support if that works better for you. The main thing is making sure you and your dog get the help you need, wherever you’re based. I also cover most areas across the South Hams, and I have clients further afield by exception, so distance is by no means a limiting factor.

I've not had success with dog trainers in the past, why should I use you?

That’s something I hear quite often. The truth is, no two dogs or owners are the same, and that’s why I don’t follow a “one size fits all” method. I take the time to get to know both you and your dog, so I can tailor the training to fit your lifestyle, your goals, and your dog’s personality. My focus is on clear communication, building engagement, and giving you practical tools you can use every day. I don’t use gimmicks or quick fixes, just proven training methods that work in real life. The aim isn’t just a quick fix, it’s helping you and your dog build a stronger, lasting relationship.

Is my dog too old to train?

Definitely not. Dogs are always learning, no matter their age. Puppies may be quick to pick things up, but older dogs often bring calmness, focus, and a willingness to work that can be a huge advantage. What matters most is setting the right pace and approach. With patience, consistency, and the right techniques, even long-standing behaviours can be changed.

How long will it take to see results?

It really depends on your dog, your goals, and how consistent you are between sessions. Some changes can be seen within the very first meeting, while others may take more time as habits and routines are reshaped. The important thing to remember is that training is a process. Steady, consistent work is what creates lasting results. I’ll support you throughout, making sure progress is being made and that you feel confident along the way.

Do you use food or treats in training?

Yes, I recommend all my clients feed their dogs high-quality food, and I will often try to use their daily food as a motivator. Food is a powerful tool, but it’s never the only one. Training with me is about balance, using food, play, praise, and structure so your dog learns to respond to you in all situations, not just when you have a treat in your hand. The goal is to build engagement and trust, so your dog listens because they understand you, not just because they want food.

Do you work with reactive or aggressive dogs?

Yes, I do. Reactivity and aggression can feel overwhelming, but with the right approach, they can be managed and improved. My focus is on understanding what triggers your dog, helping you build control and confidence, and gradually teaching your dog how to cope in situations that currently feel too much. Safety and structure always come first, and I’ll guide you every step of the way.

Can you help with puppies?

Absolutely. Puppy training is one of the best investments you can make, as it sets the foundation for everything that follows. I can help with things like crate training, toilet training, socialisation, recall, and introducing calmness around the home and outside. Getting it right from the start makes life so much easier later on.

What kind of issues do you deal with most often?

I cover a wide range of training needs. Common ones include pulling on the lead, recall problems, reactivity to other dogs or people, separation anxiety, crate training, destructive chewing, and helping dogs learn to settle both at home and out in new places. Whatever challenges you’re facing, we can put a plan together to tackle them.

Do you offer payment plans?

Yes, I do. I understand first hand that training is an important investment and that cost can sometimes be a worry. That’s why I offer flexible payment options to spread the cost of training and make it more manageable. Just let me know what works best for you and I’ll do my best to accommodate.
